Gurmat Sangeet or Kirtan is the practice of singing Gurbani (Guru’s word), either with or without the use of instruments. At Shan E Khalsa Academy, not only is this training provided, but the value of kirtan in devotional worship for the reciter (ਕੀਰਤਨੀ) and listener (ਸਰੋਤਾ) is also stressed. Shabads are taught from Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Sri Dasam Granth, Bhai Gurdaas Ji’s compositions, and Bhai Nand Lal Ji’s compositions. Furthermore, a number of skilled sevadaars participate to ensure that the students receive an enriched learning experience. In the near future, with Guru Ji’s blessing, we are hoping to incorporate more traditional instruments that were originally used to sing Gurbani. At the same time, there will be an increased emphasis on singing shabads in nirdharat raags (specified musical notes) used to evoke the emotions that our Gurus intended for the purpose of understanding the Shabad.
